Food

Food is one of my weaknesses. I love food, and ever since I quit smoking, it seems food has replaced that vice!!! For about 5 years now I have battled with food. It has dawned on me….I, me – myself, have battled food alone. Oh I have a great group that is so supportive and I have no doubt if we all lived within the same area, we would accomplish our weight lose goals!!

Since I quit smoking & got dentures, it seems I battle with food on a daily basis. I often fear that deadly sin…gluttony.
  • Proverbs 25:16 "If you have found honey, eat only enough for you, lest you have your fill of it and vomit."
  • Psalm 78:18 "They tested God in their heart by demanding the food they craved."
I realized months and months ago, I hover right around food addiction. Whereas most people stop when full, I will continue on. I eat just to eat…Not because I am hungry, not because my body needs nourishment, I eat simply because it is there…

Guess it's time to hand this one over to God as well. It's clear after 5 years of my food battle that I simply cannot do this on my own…Yes yet another thing I held onto and I thought I could do on my own…

Time to let it go and give it to God

Chapter 14 Behavior 11: Emotional Habits - True Self Pity

http://make1break1.blogspot.com/2013/07/chapter-14-behavior-11-emotional-habits.html

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines self-pity as: “pity for oneself; especially: a self-indulgent dwelling on one's own sorrows or misfortunes

We all have gotten to this point, we have sunk down to the level of simply feeling sorry for ourselves. A bad day, bad month, or even bad year(s). Micah 7:1-2: “Woe is me! I am like the one who gathers summer fruit, when the vines have been gleaned There is no cluster to eat, no early fig that I crave. The faithful have vanished from the earth, no mortal is just! They all lie in wait to shed blood, each one ensnares the other.” Oh woe is me!

Self-Pity is another bad habit. It can lead to depression, lead to feeling defeated, lead to feelings of worthless ness and despair. It is a habit that the devil likes and dances on the sidelines cheering us as we go down this road. It’s a habit that takes our focus away from God, leaving us questioning if God is really there. Psalm 13:1 “How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hind your face from me?”

For years I lived with the self-pity attitude. My first husband was addicted to porn, and verbally abusive. Through-out my marriage and years after we have separated I carried that self-pity burden. Woe is me, I lived with that. Woe is me, I have low self-esteem. Woe is me, I am not good enough. The list can go on and on…

What do we do? What can we do? We can look to God.

1.    Learn to recognize when we are beginning to sink into self-pity
2.    Find a verse in the bible that shows you the promise of God’s word.
-      Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
-      Matthew 11:28-30 “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
3.       Give it to God. Let go of the anger, the hurt feelings, and simply forgive and let go.
4.       Start to have a grateful heart. Begin to look for things to thank God for, even the smallest of things.

The next time you start down the path of self-pity, stop, look to God and breathe knowing He is God.

Abba,
I just want to thank you for Your love and for all you do for us. Lord I ask that you teach us to open our hearts to you, allowing us to come to you when self-pity tries to take hold. Abba, I ask that you give each of us discernment, wisdom and guidance to know when self-pity is begin to enter our minds, and show us your all-consuming love so that we can let self-pity go and not allow it to take root.

Amen

De-Weeding the Garden

Its been quite a while since I planted my garden. OK its been a few months!! Between rain, work, things to do almost EVERY weekend, I finally made my way out to the garden to both clean out the weeds, and to see what was growing. To our amazement, we had 2 peppers, not sure if they are hot or not, and either a zucchini or a cucumber. Yes I probably should have written down what I planted and where..
As I am cleaning out the garden I think of just how much work this is, how much de-weeding is involved. It is physically tiring....
I think of God and Us! God is de-weeding us. He is trying to take out the weeds, the things that are not good for us, so we can flourish and grow much like our vegetables.
Pruning, cleaning out the weeds, is difficult and when it comes to cleaning out the dark areas of our lives, it is neither easy or pleasant. In a garden we do not know where the weed will pop up, but once it breaks through the ground, we can see it, and then remove it. God does the same, He brings our sins, our bad to light so that we can see it, give it to God, and remove it!
What is God bringing to light that he wants you to let go of??

What is your focus?

“Focus on giants – you stumble.”
“Focus on God – your giants tumble.” – Ma Lucado

This was in one of the books I am reading and I love it. The book talks about David & Goliath. David’s focus was on God – the armies of God and God would deliver Goliath into David’s hands. What is the giant in your life? Unemployment? Depression? Problems at home? Abuse? Abandonment? Rejection? Insecurities? The list can go on and on.

Life can through us some pretty nasty curveballs and the hard times can be down right rough. What is your focus? How about changing your focus to God? After all God conquered giants, called out kings, shut the mouths of lions and told the dead to breath. He parted the Red Sea! He made Paul a believer!
